THE POINT Comes to NYC For Climate Week 2018
Inspired by a comic book story (Tre, by Sathviga ‘Sona’ Sridhar) about a climate change superhero and threaded together with messages about solutions and hope, THE POINT was a unique collaboration between GreenPoint Innovations, the Comics Uniting Nations, Hypokrit Theatre Company, Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to bring together artists - @sonnysundancer and @asvpart, producers, educators, and local environmentalists for a series of artistic activations that include a comic book, public murals / street art, a theatrical experience, open dialogue, and an educational toolkit.
By leveraging the arts to bring together a local and global representation of children, youth, dignitaries, business leaders, and the general public, our goal is to recognize and act on the human impacts of climate change and the power and role of all people, particularly the youth, to take action for a better future.
Sonny’s “Kin”
The child and jaguar mural, measuring 32 feet by 25 feet and at the corner of Lorimer Street and Throop Avenue, is of a Yawanawa girl from Acre, Brazil, while the jaguar represents a species both sacred to the indigenous peoples’ and under risk. “The image that I painted is of a little girl from the tribe and a jaguar—they both manage to live together in the same environment in harmony, and they’re both looking through the same eyes. We thought the school would be a great place to start—at the youth.”
ASVP’s “Equilibrium”
The graphic, black and white tower mural - 55 feet in height and 25 feet across, made up of an elephant, bear, tiger and more, all threatened or endangered in some capacity, was painted on an opposite wall. “The basic idea is that we’re all part of the ecosystem called Earth, where all of us rely on each other in the end. If these animals were to go extinct, we’ll come tumbling down. We’re all part of a delicate balance.”
